Credit Inquiries

Will viewing my credit scores lower them?

No, your credit score is only lowered when a third party like a bank or lender checks it – not when you check it yourself. Contrary to popular belief, you can check your own credit as often as you like with no risk of impacting it negatively. Known as a "soft inquiry", accessing your own credit information is a harmless and smart way to ensure your credit score is as high as it should be.

What is a "hard inquiry"?

An example of a "hard inquiry" is when a lender reviews your credit as part of an application. Too many hard inquiries from lenders, insurers, employers and other third parties are a red flag that you are overextending yourself, and could have serious consequences for your credit score. Credit monitoring and alerts keep you informed whenever hard inquiries made on your credit files at any of the three credit bureaus.
